The national election is sneaking up on us and the students of Mission High are sharing their thoughts on the presidential debate, the candidates, their platforms, and their main priorities. I conducted a survey to gather student opinions to highlight the responses of our student body and explore perspectives and concerns that we feel need to be addressed .
Summary of the Survey
The Google Form asked students a range of questions, including:
- What three topics do you think should be priorities for our future president?
- Did you watch the debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump?
- If you are 18, do you plan on voting?
- What political ideology do you lean towards?
- Which candidate do you think would be better for school safety?
Here’s what they said:
Mission voted economy (49.4%), immigration (44%), and education (42.7%) as the biggest priorities for our future president. The lowest priorities according to students was Ukraine & Russia (10.4%), National Security/ Democracy (21.2%), and Reproductive Rights (24.9%)
Majority of students are unable to vote due to age restrictions. For students who are 18 there is a .4% difference between those who will vote (10%) and those who will not (10.4%) with slightly more saying they will not vote.
Almost 70% of students remain neutral in their political ideologies.
On Tuesday we’ll have the opportunity to watch the vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and J.D Vance debate. We also have local elections with San Francisco choosing a new mayor this year.
