Last week in San Francisco has been one of the hottest this year, with high temperatures in the 80’s-90’s. On Sunday, the temperature reached 97 degrees, which is very unusual for San Francisco since it’s one of the much colder cities in California. How was Mission High affected?

“Well, I don’t have AC at home, so basically all the windows have been open and I haven’t been sleeping, and I live on my own so I also removed my covers,” said Ms. Bethany Kwan, the school counselor for the senior.
“Here at Mission High School I’m pretty lucky if I stay in my office; it’s cooler down there and we don’t have windows so the sun doesn’t come in through the window. Since I’m not usually in my office and I’m running around everywhere, it’s been hot and I’ve been sweating.”
“With no AC, it’s pretty hard at home so windows don’t even work…I have long glass windows with shades, so when the windows get hot the whole house gets hot,” said Nikka, one of the security guards. “It’s a struggle. It’s always hot, especially here in the hallways, so I can understand the students in the classes.”

“While I’m doing my homework, I feel like I need to be in front of the fan or I can’t focus and it makes me so exhausted,” said Cai Fernandez, a 12th grader at Mission who lives in the Excelsior District. “On Sunday there was a power outage in my neighborhood so the fans went off and I didn’t go to sleep until like 12.”
“The weather has caused me and my family to be in a bad mood,” said Martha Sanchez, a 12th grader who lives in the Mission District. “We also have had trouble sleeping due to the hot weather and at school it’s made me tired throughout the school day.”
“My family can’t sleep, and I wake up with sweat on my back,” said Ryan Coleman, a 12th grader at Mission who lives in San Mateo County. “I can’t even focus at school; the heat fogs (my brain). I can’t get a burrito everyday because it’s too hot for a burrito.”
