There’s other shows I grew up watching, but one of my favorites was SpongeBob. I still love it. I watched it a lot when I was really little with my older brother, Brayan. We both watched it in English and Spanish and we owned SpongeBob toys, video games, clothing, food products, coloring books and anything that had SpongeBob on it. Whenever I went to McDonalds or Burger King there would always be SpongeBob toys and we loved them.
The first movie came out in 2004 and we watched it a lot. We quoted the episodes a lot. My mom has a baby picture of me where I took a picture of SpongeBob. Whenever I went to school, I was the only student who drew or talked about it, and when the second movie came out I was happy because I didn’t think there would be sequels to come.
I like SpongeBob because I can relate or see myself in him. I wanted to be a happy and funny guy like SpongeBob. SpongeBob reminds me of the old cartoons like Looney Tunes, Popeye, and Tom & Jerry.
In 2018, Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob, died. This meant Sponge on the Run would be the last movie and the SpongeBob Birthday Blow Out would be the last piece of media with his name. My brother and I cried. When I went to school, I felt like I was the only one who cared, except for my friend Francisco.
On October 8, it was revealed that Wendy’s released a SpongeBob collaboration meal with Nickelodeon. This meal offers a Krabby Patty as seen in SpongeBob. The burger follows with the first bun, then the patty followed by ketchup, mustard, pickles, extra onions, lettuce, cheese, tomato and the final bun in that order. This promotion came about to celebrate Spongebob’s 25th anniversary. Not only that, but the first movie was re-released this past September 28th.
The meal offers a mango pineapple frosty. The Krabby Patty collab meal cost about $13.
It isn’t just Wendy’s. Other restaurants are doing the same collaboration, like nearby Super Duper Burger.
I was so excited when I heard about the Wendy’s SpongeBob collaboration, even though the creator, Stephen Hillenburg, said he did not want to push fast food on kids.
Meal review:
My brother and I took a bus all the way to Daly City. Then we walked to Wendy’s, because the bus we took doesn’t take you that far. When walking we were just happy because we had never eaten at Wendy’s before. SpongeBob seemed like the perfect reason to try it out. Once we got there, there was a huge line. We were both thinking that this meal would be amazing.
Once it was in our hands, we were upset, because we expected what Wendy’s actually marketed. There was no decorative SpongeBob packaging. Nothing. It seems like we weren’t the only ones disappointed, because online, people posted memes saying that this was a lie and a scam. They say that the burger was actually a Dave’s Double from the restaurant. It seems like other restaurants were more successful in their celebration of SpongeBob. I was disappointed with Wendy’s.
We were also upset because Wendy’s advertised Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty (the vanilla frosty with mango and pineapple puree) was so small unlike the photo we had seen online.
We opted for the triple stack burger for the Krabby Patty Kollab Burger. The burger tasted good. Whenever I eat a burger from a fast food restaurant, it’s juicy and delicious. Many people will say they have one burger they like. This one, the Krabby Patty from Wendy’s, is definitely now one of my faves. The sauce reminds me of the secret sauce from In-N-Out.
The food was good, even if the frosty was small. But if you want to buy the meal because of your nostalgia for SpongeBob, don’t bother.
