My name is Jordan Santiago and I have been skating for 6 years. It took me 4 years to perfect my skills. I was sponsored by one of my older friends’ brands, loose bolts, and I used to be in their skating group, also called loose bolts.
Based on my expertise, skating can look really hard but it is actually very simple with such a few steps.
First, you put your non-dominant foot on the top 4 screws then push with your dominant foot.
Second, your toes should be pointing on the side in the same direction.
Third, try to bend your knees to have more balance and don’t lean back or forward to avoid a fall. You only lean forward when you are pushing.
Fourth, keep practicing until the moves feel the most comfortable and have that muscle memory. Yes you will fall but always get up and try again, good luck!
Tips and tricks of getting the right gear for yourself:
You need to buy a skateboard or borrow one. I suggest you buy a skateboard from a local skateshop and you would need to invest at least 100-200 dollars for a full complete board. There are many types of boards and board shapes, but I recommend buying whatever catches your eye.
Go buy some comfortable skate shoes. I think some Adidas Superstars or maybe some SB Dunks because they are trendy and good looking. It is harder to find SB Dunks because of how popular they are, but if you can’t find a pair then I suggest getting some Vans.
Microwave your shoes so when you skate the shoe molds to your feet and it keeps you a little bit warm.
You should watch Braille Skateboarding and also search around and see what type of skating you like the most.
There’s street skating which is where you skate in the street, mainly focusing on flip tricks and grinds. There’s freestyle, which is when you stay stationary and start doing wacky stuff on your skateboard. Then there is vert skating which is when you do air tricks going in the bowls and doing the bowl grinds.
It may take a while but don’t give up and keep trying. Skating can be a creative hobby and also an escape. It’s all about who you skate with and you guys can make a lot of memories together.
