Tyler, The Creator is a versatile rapper who expresses himself through his music. Chromokopia is his 8th album.
Tyler describes the album as an early midlife crisis album revolving around the concerns young adults have over their newfound adulthood. He talks about how scared young adults may be. Tyler also talks about how anger takes over your mind because of the stress you endure.
As a non-fan who has listened to the entire album with objectivity, I think you should listen to Chromokopia because Tyler expresses himself with real life problems you can relate to.
Some of his music will give you motivation. Other songs will bring tears to your eyes.
Here are a few songs that stand out:
“Judge Judy”
“Judge Judy” was about a girl he liked. He pursues her until she stops communicating with him. She writes him a letter before dying from cancer about how she enjoyed their time together.
I say this song was pretty fire. I like the way he describes his love for her. I like the chorus. It was pretty magical. This song sounds like beach music mixed with rap and pop.
“Hey Jane”
“Hey Jane” talks about Tyler and Jane having relations. When Jane ends up unexpectedly pregnant, Tyler feels like he is not ready for a baby yet. Despite his fears, he is still empathetic about how Jane feels with the unexpected pregnancy.
I liked this song because he not only talks about how he feels about the pregnancy but acknowledges how the pregnancy is much harder for her.
“Hey Jane, who am I to come b**** and complain?
you gotta deal with all the mental and the physical change
all the heaviest emotions and the physical pain
just to give the kid the man last name? f*** that.”
That part is also my favorite part of the song because of how much empathy he shows. This song sounds upbeat and features calming jazz in the background while he talks about real life problems young people may have.
“Like Him”
Having never known his father, Tyler expresses hope that his father isn’t a bad person. However, at the end of the song, Tyler’s mom, Bonita Smith, admits that she kept Tyler’s father away from him even though he wanted to be part of his life. I give this a rating of 10/10 because it relates to me. My favorite lyric is when he says “Mama I’m chasing a ghost, I don’t know where he is”. This song sounds like a very sad piano playing during the first half. Then all of a sudden, a burst of upbeat music plays to show the dramatic singing Tyler and Lola Young do.
“Noid”
This song talks about the album’s protagonist, St. Chroma, who is Tyler’s alter ego. He is being consumed by paranoia and feels like he is being chased and watched. Someone threatens him with a gun. The surprising twist is that none of it is real.
This song sounds like a very energetic beat with a bit of piano and also a bit of the electric drums. My favorite lyric is “people want info about me, read a book on me,” because it sounds good and it just goes hard when he says it.
What I think of the album is a 6/10 because Tyler, The Creator is known to have produced better music in the past like “She” from 2011. I recommend this album to Tyler, The Creator fans because it is versatile with different types of beats and tempo. You could listen to this album while you try to be productive or listen to it when you are down. I feel like this album would relieve you from stress while you are laying in bed or just cleaning the house.
