On the streaming platform Netflix, there is an original series called “Anne with an E”. It’s based in the late 19th century, and it follows a red-headed, freckled girl who has been an orphan since she was just three months old.
Growing up she moved from several different homes “earning her keep” by helping the mothers care for their children. She would often be overworked, yelled at, and abused for not doing her tasks the way the mother wanted.
Anne always had such a unique way of viewing the world but is never allowed to speak her mind when she wants. She’s always told to keep quiet and that she is too young to have certain opinions on things that involve her being.
The first episode begins with two siblings, Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert, talking about picking up the orphan they have decided to adopt. But there is a slight problem. When Mathew goes on over to pick up this orphan, they were expecting a boy, and it threw him off when he saw Anne. He decides to take her to their home at Green Gables and they decide whether to keep her or return her.
Throughout the series we see Anne mature and learn her way through the new environment she is thrown into. A world of manners, school, and freedom that she never got in her life.
Not only does Anne affect the characters she is surrounded by, but also those who watch the show. The way she expresses herself will have you expanding your own way of viewing life.
The audience doesn’t only watch her struggles, but also those she is surrounded by. You can find yourself bingeing this show and longing for more despite it being cancelled.
