Charmed is a TV show that aired from 1998 to 2006. The show is about three sisters, Prue (Shanna Doherty), Piper (Holly Marie), and Phoebe Halliwell (Alyssa Milano), who find out they are witches. Their journey is filled with adventure and mystery, magic, danger, and heartfelt moments. I think it’s one of the best supernatural shows.
The Halliwell sisters live in San Francisco, which is where I was born and raised, so I immediately was glued to the show. Though they likely used stock footage or filmed elsewhere, some of the spots I notice from San Francisco are the Bay Bridge, Downtown, Alcatraz Island, Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, and the Palace of Fine Arts.
The two oldest sisters, Prue and Piper, are raised by their grandmother in Halliwell Manor in San Francisco after their mother passes away when they were young. They find out they were witches when Phoebe, the youngest sister, moves back into Halliwell Manor after living in New York.
Phoebe finds a random book called “Book of Shadows”. They find out the book wasn’t so random after all when it reveals that they are “Charmed Ones”, three powerful witches destined to fight evil for the better of good.
Each sister has a unique power: Prue has telekinesis, so she can move things with her mind; Piper can freeze time and later learns to explode things, and Phoebe starts with premonitions and later gains the power to levitate in the air.
Though technically a supernatural show, the TV series is about love, lust, forbidden romance and shocking family dynamics. One of the reasons I love “Charmed” is because of the strong bond between the sisters and how entertaining the show is. The sisters face many challenges including battling demons, warlocks, and other supernatural threats. However, no matter what happens, they stick together.
Spoiler: The older sister, Prue, dies from fighting a demon. This loss was heartbreaking and it changed the entire dynamic of the show. Later, there was a new “secret sister”, Paige, a long-lost half sister, who has the power to move things with her mind almost just like Prue. Although the sisters are still grieving Prue’s death, they overcome it and continue their mission to protect the world from evil. End of spoiler.
There is a new version of Charmed that aired in 2018. It’s okay, but the original will always be my favorite because of the characters, the magic, and the amazing plot twists and that it was set in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Charmed is my comfort show. I have watched it more than 4 times and I never get tired of it. It’s a show that never gets old and keeps me hooked every time I watch it. This show is a 10 out of 10 for me.
