On a sunny afternoon in San Francisco, senior Caysey Vasquez laughs while recalling how the idea for her club wasn’t even hers at first. “My friend was hesitant to start it,” she says, “but she asked me to help lead and implement ideas with her.” What began as a quiet suggestion between friends has now grown into one of the school’s most vibrant student-led groups.
That moment of encouragement from one friend leaning on another sparked more than just a club. It sparked a movement toward creating a safe, inclusive space where students could express themselves, celebrate art, and build community. “I’ve always had this dream of being able to express myself without the fear of knowing that there would be people who would judge me,” Caysey said with clarity and the experience that these words entailed.
Caysey is president of “Explosión Latina,” a school club that gives students a safe space to express themselves while staying true to their culture. It’s a place where members can find peace, connection, and community. The club is known for being inclusive and welcoming to everyone, creating an environment where cultural pride and self expression are celebrated together. Caysey has embraced the challenge of leadership, turning an idea into action. Caysey is motivated by friends like Isis Quiroz and Evelin Martinez Izazaga, fellow senior students, and supported by Mr. Banyai, the astronomy teacher and sponsor of the club. She works to ensure students not only have a place to belong but also a chance to shine. Her journey reflects a passion for advocacy, creativity, and leaving behind something meaningful for those who will follow.
Although Caysey admits Mission has its flaws particularly in decision making and the limited number of AP courses offered, she doesn’t dwell on the shortcomings. Instead, she channels her energy into creating solutions. The club is her way of filling in gaps: offering students the chance to explore, express, and connect in ways the curriculum sometimes overlooks. “It’s something we realized late. That’s why implementing this club in our community will also help other generations spread the word about the new AP courses, since we deserve them,” Caysey said, knowing that this should have been done a long time ago.
Her drive to help others stretches beyond the walls of the club. She proudly advocates for seniors, newcomers, and students from diverse backgrounds. Language barriers don’t discourage her; instead, they inspire her to find ways to uplift every voice. “Seeing people succeed and reach their goals brings me pride and joy,” she says, her sincerity evident.
Balancing leadership hasn’t always been easy. “Being president can be stressful,” she admits, “but I love my club and cherish every moment of being involved.” Thanks to constant encouragement from her boyfriend and friends, she stays motivated even on the hardest days.
Now in her final year, she’s determined to leave a legacy that lasts. She envisions the club growing even stronger, participating in assemblies, and opening more doors for students to discover this new stage in their lives.
After all, what started as her friend’s idea has become her mission: to make sure every student has a safe place to belong and to leave behind more joy than she found.
