When we walked into the shop, the owner, Jack, greeted us warmly and immediately noticed that we were Emilio’s friends. Jack told us that Emilio visits his shop twice a week.
The shop itself is kind of narrow and dimly lit, but not too dark. They decorated the space with metal boxes in all different sizes, and each box has pictures painted or printed on them. Some of the prints are photos of the shopkeeper and his partner and memories they hold dear. Jack also makes custom boxes for customers, where people can send in their own pictures and choose the size they want. There are also boxes with the names of streets in San Francisco.
The shop is full of chocolate from all sorts of countries. For example, Messiah, a fellow reporter, bought chocolate from Cuba. Jack gives you the feeling that he really lives for chocolate and does it from the heart. When someone walks into the store, he always asks what kind of chocolate they like so he can figure out the best one for them. He also said he’s very happy the Christmas season is coming because that’s when he makes the most money, since everyone wants to buy something small. Easter is also very popular.
When we interviewed him, he told us a lot about his fashion shop. He used to run it with a friend, but he eventually realized it wasn’t what he really wanted to do. His clothing store went out of business in 2020 when COVID hit, but he still kept many of his designs and ideas.
