Rodarius Green, also known as Rod Wave, is my favorite rapper, singer, and songwriter who is receiving generational love and support as he hits No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop billboards thanks to his new album “Last Lap” released Oct. 11, 2024.
My top 3 favorite songs from “Last Lap” are ‘25,” “Angel with an Attitude,” and the title song, “Last Lap.”
25
The title represents Rod Wave’s age. He talks about how he’s tired of the same things happening over and over in his life. He says:
“Same old games, same old pain
It’s time for a change ‘case
Certain sh** ain’t like me no more
Certain sh** don’t excite me no more”
I connect with this verse because it’s real even at my age, 17. Life is a repeated cycle that’s tiring.
Angel with an Attitude
This is a love song describing someone frustrated by hardships in life:
“Life about choices, you live with what you choose…is this how the story ends?”
Rod Wave wishes there was peace in the world and his life. He has suffered a lot, like having his family in prison and experiencing depression. In this song, his new lover is “an angel with an attitude” who doesn’t measure up to the person he’s talking to.
“She wasn’t even half of you…”
Last Lap
“And it’s hard, I know, they want me to move
But I ain’t ready to let go, my ni*** I ain’t ready to let go, my ni***
What’s happening unc’? I know you looking down smiling at me
I pray that you found some peace and finally happy
But I can’t sleep, dawg, I cry every f****** night
this’ll probably the hardest chapter of my f****** life”
I picked this song because I connected with this song in so many ways. The lyrics helped me move on. My grandma passed away this year and it was hard to keep going with life as if she wasn’t just here. She was like my second mom.
“And every step I take I can hear you say keep going, keep going, keep going”
When I heard this song I got closure in my heart, so when the line he says “keep going,” I think of my sweet grandma at peace looking down at me. She told me she wanted to see me graduate. I was so sad she couldn’t see that, but that is my motivation to keep going and make myself and my grandma proud.
This whole album is a 9-10 for me. I love every song. They all have a meaning to them; it’s deeper than just a song. They help many people in life to go one more day and that is why I love Rod Wave. He is inspiring. Some people might say he’s sad and depressing but if you listen to him he speaks on real stuff that goes on in people’s lives and that’s why so many people can connect with him.
