On Jan. 29, 2026, journalism students toured Chinatown with acclaimed Asian American filmmaker Josh Chuck, creator of the 2019 documentary Chinatown Rising.
The Chinatown Social Justice Tour explores how young residents stood on the front lines to protect their historic neighborhood during a period of rapid change from the 1960s through the 1980s. By challenging long-standing practices, organizing protests and leading demonstrations, a generation of youth activists helped reshape the future of Chinatown. Their efforts are documented in Chinatown Rising and brought to life through the stories Chuck shares on the tour.
The Chinatown Social Justice Tour explores how young residents stood at the forefront of protecting their historic neighborhood during periods of major transition from the 1960s through the 1980s. By challenging long-standing practices and organizing protests and demonstrations, this younger generation reshaped the future of Chinatown. Their stories are preserved in the film and brought to life through Chuck’s storytelling.
In his 100-minute walking tour, Chuck guides participants through twelve historically and culturally significant sites, each highlighting a powerful example of youth activism and leadership. Through personal commentary and firsthand accounts, the tour demonstrates how teenagers and young community members can create meaningful change—regardless of age.
