On February 9th, the Mission High School community and the entire school district experienced a work stoppage due to disagreements between the SFUSD and UESF systems regarding the funds requested by teachers and staff at the school.
Among the crowd, we focus on Joselyn Carrillo Florian, a senior at Mission High School who was here throughout the week of the strike, distributing food and water to the teachers. This was something done from the heart; Joselyn felt compelled to do it because, like everyone else, she has feelings, and as she said, she wants what’s best for this community.
Joselyn also left us with very specific and remarkable quotes, as she was very expressive. Here are some words dedicated to the entire school: “It wasn’t necessary to be here during the strike, but it would have been nice to see more people supporting our teachers who have done so much for us.”
Another quote was, “The week of the strike was very hard for me because I lost valuable days of learning, and above all, my routine changed. I never would have imagined that something like this would happen.” This was very true, since not only Joselyn but also other people lost valuable days of learning. One last thing that emphasizes this is that she was very scared that the agreements hadn’t been made.
The mere thought of something of this magnitude made most of the seniors of Mission High School doubt whether they would really miss their graduation, since Joselyn recalled that something similar happened at a high school in Oakland. But the important thing now is that everything is back to normal, and she feels very happy to have done at least a little for this school.
Joselyn doesn’t expect any rewards; the only hope is that we can continue learning and that the school and the district can continue as they were before the strike. A few final words were also added, thanking the community that was there during the strike and expressing pride in all of us for having endured so much time at home.
