Jackie Fielder was elected on January 8, 2025, as the district supervisor for District 9, which includes the Mission and Excelsior. Her main job is to make decisions for the district that represent the people’s needs. She represents a majority of people who are people of color. On March 27, it was reported that Jackie Fielder was going through a personal mental health crisis.
There has been a huge spike in mental health issues in the US, and it looks like the trend is increasing. Fielder’s mental health crisis is something that puts the spotlight on the issues regarding mental health. The SF Chronicle stated, “Fielder had already missed two weeks of board and committee meetings before news broke on March 27 that she was in the hospital amid an acute personal health crisis.” Recently, she requested to be excused from board meetings until June 30, 2026. This is an issue because this means that her district will not be able to be represented like other districts.
Mental health crisis is a problem. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports” more than 50% of Americans will experience mental illness in their lifetime.”Surprisingly, it has been somewhat of a problem for politicians. One example is in the CNN article Lawmakers who struggle and have struggled with mental health. The article mentioned a senator who has experienced depression, “I thought I was just off,” Smith said. “Something is wrong with me. I’m not with it. I’m not doing well enough, and then you start to sort of blame yourself, and I was sort of in that cycle,” Smith said.
We assume politicians have everything covered, but we have to separate a person’s status from their well-being. Also, understanding where politicians like Jackie Fielder are: a woman of color taking a job in a white male dominated field is key to understand why Jackie Fielder might be feeling like this “The well-being of politicians is negatively affected by fear of violence and harassment, as well as online hate, which women and politicians belonging to minorities are more likely to face.” said by Demo Finland.
If cases like Jackie Fielder’s continue, then it will be a big downfall for the people, so how can we help future politicians from taking a job that may be mentally damaging to them? Or should we provide resources for politicians suffering from mental health issues?
Many politicians face personal issues like combating mental health, but Fielder finally sheds light on the big issue with these kinds of crises. ¨What does her situation reveal about the challenges facing young people in elected office and the resources available to support them?¨-KQED asks. We are in a generation where mental health is treated as a serious health crisis, and finding ways to prevent mental health crises in politicians is difficult due to the huge responsibilities they have, but providing more resources can be beneficial to them, and if more resources are provided, then everyone as a whole will benefit from them.
