Ms. April: The Heart and Soul of Mission

Ms. April: The Heart and Soul of Mission
Eri Cruz-Moreno

If you go down to the main office, Ms. April Smith-Harrison will probably be on the phone. “Alright, I’ll send them down,” she’ll say calmly. She’s always busy writing things down, making sure papers get to teachers, and greeting whoever walks through the door.

Ms. April is a Senior Clerk who uses her kind and friendly personality to help Mission High School and its students and teachers. She works downstairs in the main office and makes sure that the office runs smoothly.

Ms. April loves “…coming to school and seeing the kids with a smile on their faces.” She also loves seeing the students preparing to start their day.

She has been working here for four years. In that time, she has noticed the teachers starting to take notice of the students and what they want, which is different than before. The students are leaders now, with student leadership and various clubs.

Her favorite memories are seeing the students perform and share their cultural stories, history and dances during assemblies. She likes them and finds them sweet.

Outside of Mission, Ms. April likes to be with her family, read books, go to the park, swim and go on vacations.

One day, she would like to run her own group home for homeless students.

Ms. April’s advice for students: “Be nice, stay focused and never stop learning. Be responsible and enjoy life.”
