Ms. Murray: My name is Garen Murray. I am an English teacher and educator at Mission High School.
Q: What is your role in the strike?
Ms. Murray: I serve on the Union Building Committee here at Mission. My responsibilities included organizing logistics, managing attendance, ensuring safety protocols were followed, and making sure everyone was safe during the strike.
Q: What has your experience with the strike been like?
Ms. Murray: It’s been a mix of stress and fulfillment. It was sometimes challenging, but overall, it was a wonderful experience to be alongside fellow teachers and educators. The community’s support was truly inspiring—especially when students and local residents came out to stand with us. Seeing the community unite in support created a powerful sense of solidarity.
Q: What will you remember most or take away from this experience?
Ms. Murray: One of the most memorable moments was our slogan during the strike: “When we fight, we win.” It encapsulated our determination and hope. I believe the biggest takeaway is the strength of community—both within our school and across the city. The support we received—from food donations to people honking their horns in solidarity—reminded us that we’re not alone in this fight. It reinforced the importance of standing together for the issues we believe in.
