Asterlee Baclay, known as Ms. Asterlee by her students, is an AP Calculus teacher. During the strike, she could be found supporting her fellow teachers and students every morning in front of Mission High.
How did you prepare for the strike?
“I locked up all the calculators and my papers just in case scabs came in, to make it a little harder. And I had to make sure I’d be financially okay for the month because I didn’t know how long the strike would last.”
What were your takeaways?
“The strike was mentally and emotionally taxing because of the uncertainty, but it also reminded me how much I really love San Francisco — how people can come together around a cause. Everyone showing up showed that this city has a sense of community I don’t think I’d find anywhere else. Overall, it was very empowering. I just never thought I’d experience a strike, especially in my second year of teaching.”
